A famous representative of the golden age of the Flemish painting, graphic artist, etcher. Born in Leiden. He studied painting since he was 13 years old under the guidance of Leiden artist J. Van Svanenburg, since 1623 - under the guidance of a famous historical painting master P. Lastman in Amsterdam. In 1627 together with the artist J. Lievens he opened a training workshop in Leiden, which gained in popularity in a few years. In 1629 the master was noticed and highly appreciated by the secretary of Prince of Orange C. Huygens, due to whom there appeared large orders and close connections in high circles.In 1631 he moved to Amsterdam, where he gained recognition and fame very quickly. Author of portraits and works of historical and biblical themes. Innovative artist's works had a significant influence on the development of the world art. His works are stored in major museums and private collections of the world.
