The most famous of the Dutch painters of the XVIIth century, creating in the era of heyday of the national school of painting. He belonged to the famous dynasty of landscape painters and was one of the most famous masters of this genre in the Netherlands. Born in Haarlem, the Netherlands. He studied under the guidance of his uncle - S. van Ruisdael. In 1646 he entered the city guild of painters of St. Luke. Around 1656 he settled in Amsterdam, where he lived until his death. The main motifs for the artist's works were the views of forests, wetlands, rivers and canals of the Netherlands with picturesque mills under cloudy sky high and filled with a kind of romanticism of mountain streams with cascades. The landscapes of the artist were highly appriciated by his contemporaries, because in his recent years, the master created numerous landscapes, using variations of his most popular motifs, which include rocky landscape with a waterfall. The landscapes of the artist are stored in major museums and private collections of the world, particularly in the Art Museums in St. Petersburg, Amsterdam, the Hague, Vienna, Paris, London, New York and in many others.
