An outstanding Russian painter. Born in the village of Tymasheve, Kaluga region. He studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1856 - 1865) under the guidance of S. Zaryanka and Y. Sorokin. He received two silver medals from St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (in 1864 and in 1865). In 1866 he was awarded the title of the 3rd degree artist, in 1870 - the title of the 1st degree artist. In the mid-1870s he took part in the decoration of Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow. Board member and one of the most active participants of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions. He taught in Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1873 - 1894), his students were S. Ivanov, M. Kasatkin, K. Korovin, M. Nesterov, V. Byalynytskyy-Birulya. In 1893 he was elected operating member of the Academy of Arts. In 1880 he worked mainly in the genre art. His works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and in many other museums of Russia and Ukraine.
