A Russian artist of Italian origin, watercolourist, graphic artist, landscape painter. Born in Milan. He studied in the Art Academy di Brera in under the guidance of J. Miliary and E. Corrodi. Since 1839 he lived in Russia. He gave painting lessons in the homes of Petersburg nobility, including teaching the art to Princess I. Gagarina (1840s). Turning to himself the attention of Emperor Nicholas I, he received an order for specific drawings of architectural pavilions in Alexandria and Kronstadt fortifications. He became one of the most famous artists among the Russian aristocracy in the mid-nineteenth century. Since 1851 he completed the court orders, together with K. Ukhtomskyy and E. Gau he worked at a series of watercolors of the New Hermitage Hall. Since 1854 Р Academician of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, since 1861 - Professor of "the perspective watercolor painting". Since 1854 he traveled a lot, especially to the southern provinces (the Crimea), for three years he lived in the Caucasus, where he carried out the order of the Grand Duke Mikhailo Mykolayovych. Famous as a great teacher, gave private lessons. From 1865 till 1867 he taught watercolor painting in Pavlovsk Institute, during 1871 - 1872 - at costume classes of Petersburg Academy of Arts and the Central School of Technical Drawing. A lot of Russian artists underwent training in the drawing school of the artist. One of the organizers of the Imperial union of watercolorists (1880). Participant of the exhibitions in Russia, Vienna, Paris and London. He had brilliant skills of air and architectural perspective. Master of landscape and interior watercolors (enfilades of the palaces in Tsarskoe Selo, Alupka, Hermitage views, etc.). He led a fruitful creative activity, painted watercolor albums for the members of the imperial family.
