A prominent Russian artist. Born in the military family, who won the knighthood. From 1870 till 1871 he studied at the Natural department of Novorossiysk University in Odessa, attended the lectures of I. Mechnykov, who later became his friend. He studied painting independently, using the advice of A. Bogolyubov. In 1876 he made a trip to Italy, visited Milan and Rome, in 1877 he came to Paris. Since then he periodically lived in Paris for a long time (until 1904). There he began his career in painting under the direction of O. Bogolyubov. Member of the Union of Artists since 1877, of the Society of southern Russian artists since 1891, of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions since 1905. In 1881 he was commissioned by the Russian government to implement nine panels with the views of Bulgaria, where at that time there were the fightings of the Russian-Turkish war (1877 - 1878). In the 1880s he worked in Barbizon near Paris, in the early 1890s - in the southern and southwestern parts of France, arriving in the summer to Russia. From 1914 till 1919 he lived in Russia and Ukraine. In 1919 he went to Belgium. He took an active part in the exhibitions of the Academy of Arts, of Moscow Society of Art Lovers, the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, the Society of southern Russian artists, in Paris Salons, also he exhibited his works in Berlin, Venice, Munich, Copenhagen. Academician and member of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts since 1904. Author of landscapes, portraits, still lives and genre scenes. His works are presented in the most famous museum collections in Russia and Europe.
