A Russian painter, the founder of the realistic professional painting in Karelia. Born in Perm province, the son of a priest. He received elementary art education in Perm under the guidance of a well-known painter A. Shanin. He graduated from the Higher Art School of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. After graduation he underwent a training course at the workshop of I. Repin. One of the most famous of his works "Weaving" was shown at the exhibitions in Moscow (1898), Munich (1901), San Luis (France, 1904) and received international recognition. Since 1912 he exhibited his works at the exhibitions of Petersburg artists. Since 1919 he lived in Petrozavodsk, where he taught drawing and painting at different art schools (1921 - 1936). He was a headmaster of Petrozavodsk Art School and Workshop (1919 - 1921). He took an active part in the art exhibitions of Karelia. He held a series of solo exhibitions in Petrozavodsk (1921, 1928, 1937). Honored Artist of the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (1939) and People's Artist of Karel-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic (1944). Many of paintings were destroyed during the Great Patirotic War. Those that remained are stored in the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia and in other museums and private collections.
