A prominent Russian painter and theater artist, teacher, public figure. Born in St. Petersburg. He studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1866 - 1871), he took painting lessons under the guidance of P. Chystyakov and I. Kramskoy. In 1870 he received a big gold medal and the title of the class artist. Pensioner of the Academy of Arts (1872 - 1876) in France, Italy and Germany. Member and exhibitor of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (since 1878), Abramtsevskyy artistic circle, Moscow union of artists, etc. In 1876 he won the title of the academician, in 1892 Р of the Professor, in 1893 he became a member of the Academy of Arts. From 1881 till 1882 he made a creative journey through Egypt, Syria, Palestine and Greece. He demonstrated the sketches which he had brought from there at the exhibition of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (1885). During 1882 - 1895 he taught at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He resigned from the Academy of Arts to protest the shooting demonstrations of 1905. Author of landscapes, genre, historical and religious compositions. The major achievements of the master in the technique of plein air and disclosure of etude significance had an important impact on subsequent generations of artists. His works are presented at Kyiv National Museum of the Russian Art, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Museum-Reserve of V. Polenov, in the Art Museums of Nyzhniy Novgorod, Voronezh, Saratov, etc.
