He served as an artist-historian of the Black Sea Fleet. Since 1910 he participated in the exhibitions. Since 1920 he lived in exile, he worked as a stage designer. The author of the stage scenery for the opera "Boris Godunov" of the Royal Prague Theater production. In 1923 in Berlin he met M. Gorky, who praised the talent of a scientist and contributed to the edition of M. PineginХs books of the Russian North. In 1924 he returned to Russia. He worked as a researcher at the geophysical stations in the Arctic, took part in the creation of the Arctic Institute and Museum of the Arctic. Author of numerous books about the Russian North. One of the founders of the Russian polar school artists. His works are stored in the State Russian Museum, the Russian State Museum of Arctic and Antarctic, etc.
