An American artist and art critic. One of the most influential figures in the history of art and culture of the United States. Born in New York. In 1903 he graduated from New York School of Art, in 1907 – from Independent Academy of Arts of P Ranson in Paris. During 1906 - 1958 he lectured throughout the USA. From 1920 till 1932 he taught the history of the European art in the University of California in Berkeley and in the 1920s - in the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He lived and worked in New York, Paris, Mexico, Italy and Germany. He published over 10 books and 200 articles devoted to the history of art. In 1947 there was a large retrospective exhibition in New York. Author of landscapes, still lives and genre scenes. His works are stored in the Art Museum of the USA, Mexico and France.
