A painter, graphic artist, teacher. He worked in the field of landscape, still life, genre painting, portrait. Born in Odessa. From 1879 till 1881 he studied at Odessa Drawing School. In 1882 he entered the private Moscow studio of Professor E. Sorokina. During 1883 - 1884 he studied in Munich Academy of Arts (under the guidance of I. Herterih and I Liezenmayer), which he finished with the medal. In 1889 he moved to Moscow and became a member of the artistic circle W. Polenov and A. Polenov. The same year his painting "A Letter from the motherland" was acquired P. Tretyakov. In 1894 the painting "On the eve of the exam" received the gold medal at the exhibition in Munich, in 1900 it was acquired by the Luxembourg Museum in Paris. In 1902 the painting "Tolstoy in Yasnaya Polyana with the family" was acquired by the Grand Duke Georgiy Olexandrovych for the Russian Museum. In the years of 1898 - 1899 at the request of L. Tolstoy he completed illustrations for the novel "Resurrection". In 1889 he opened a private drawing school in Moscow, from 1894 till 1918 he taught at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He participated in the exhibitions of Moscow Society of Art Lovers, the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, of Russian and Finnish Artists of the Association "36 Artists", the Union of Russian Artists (founding member). In 1921 his family moved to Berlin. He exhibited his works at Berlin secession, at the exhibitions of Russian art in Paris, the Hague, Berlin, the USA. In 1927 and 1932 he had a solo exhibition in Berlin. In 1938 went to England to the daughter, he lived and worked in London for a while. The last years of his life he lived in Oxford.
