Since 1802 he lived in St. Petersburg, served at the General Headquarters "For desighing drawings of military costumes". He was on friendly terms with A. Kyprenskyy. Since 1809 - academician of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He was the first in Russia to introduce the technique of lithography. He brilliantly painted military costumes, riders and horses. Author of a series of caricatures. He made a substantial impact on the battle, community and portrait genre in the Russian art. His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Historical Museum in Moscow and in many other museums around the world.
