A Ukrainian artist, an outstanding master of graphics. Born on the farmstead of Narbutivka, Sumy region. Since 1906 he lived in St. Petersburg. In the mid-1900s he attended the art school of E. Zvantseva, where he studied under the guidance of L. Bakst, M. Dobuzhynskyy, K. Somov. He used I. Bilibin's advice. In 1909 he studied in the studio of the graphic artist S. Holl_sy in Munich. He took part in the exhibitions of the Union of Russian Artists, "The World of Art" in numerous exhibitions in Petrograd, Kazan, Kharkiv, Lviv. He worked in the fields of book and easel graphics, created book-plates. He was a permanent employee of the "Apollo" magazine, worked with such publishers as M. Wolff, I. Knebel, such magazines as "Gerboved" (1913 - 1915), "Lukomorye" (1914 - 1916), etc. He designed and illustrated several books, especially he became known as one of the reformers of the children's book. Since 1917 he lived in Kyiv. Author of the first Ukrainian state bank notes and stamps, as well as of the project of the coat arms of the Ukrainian state. One of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, since 1917 Р the Professor, since 1918 - Rector of the Academy of Arts. In 1926 in Kyiv there was held a memorial exhibition of the artist. His works are kept in the National Art Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Museum of Fine Arts, etc.
